Tourist guiding is a regulated profession in South Africa.

Tourist guides register through the relevant Provincial Registrar after meeting the applicable requirements.

The identification card can show information such as the guide's category and the site(s), region(s) and relevant specialities for which the guide has been found competent.

Check exactly what's included

Two tours with similar names can include very different things.

Before booking, check whether the price includes items such as:

• transport;
• entrance fees;
• meals;
• drinks;
• tastings;
• equipment;
• conservation fees;
• guide services;
• hotel collection;
• return transport; or
• other advertised activities.

Also ask what isn't included.

Compare the total price

A cheaper advertised price isn't necessarily a cheaper experience once extras are added.

Check:

• price per person or per group;
• minimum group size;
• child pricing where relevant;
• private-tour supplements;
• entrance fees;
• equipment hire;
• transport charges;
• optional activities; and
• any other compulsory charges.

Compare like with like.

Check the group size

Group size can materially change an experience.

Ask:

• maximum group size;
• whether the tour is private or shared;
• whether a minimum number of participants is required;
• what happens if that minimum isn't reached; and
• whether the vehicle or activity setup changes according to group size.

Confirm the meeting or pick-up arrangements

Before the day, confirm:

If hotel collection is advertised, confirm whether your particular accommodation is within the collection area.

Treat tourist transport as a separate check

A tourist guide and a tourist transport operator aren't automatically the same regulatory thing.

Tourist transport services can be subject to operating-licence requirements under South Africa's land-transport framework.

If transport forms an important part of the service, ask appropriate questions about the operator and vehicle rather than assuming a tourist-guide badge covers the transport service.

Know a Pro's ID Verified badge doesn't verify transport operating licences, vehicle roadworthiness or insurance.

Ask more questions for adventure activities

Adventure experiences can involve risks that aren't relevant to an ordinary walking tour.

Depending on the activity, useful questions may include:

• what experience or training the provider has;
• what equipment is supplied;
• what you need to bring;
• age or fitness requirements;
• medical considerations;
• weather limits;
• group size;
• emergency procedures;
• insurance arrangements; and
• what qualifications, registrations or activity-specific requirements apply.

The right questions depend on the activity.

Don't assume one general “tourism licence” covers every adventure activity.

Understand weather-dependent experiences

Safaris, hikes, boat trips, diving, surfing and other outdoor experiences may be affected by weather or environmental conditions.

Before paying, ask what happens if the provider decides conditions aren't suitable.

Check whether the activity is:

• refunded;

Understand what ID Verified means

ID Verified relates to identity verification.

It does not verify:

Before you book, confirm the essentials

For an ordinary tour, your final check might be quite short.

For an adventure activity or a service involving transport, you may need more information.

Depending on the experience, confirm:

• provider;
• tourist-guide registration where applicable;
• date and time;
• meeting or pick-up point;
• group size;
• itinerary;
• what's included;
• what's excluded;
• total price;
• transport arrangements;
• activity requirements;
• cancellation terms; and
